HIGH POINT — A High Point physician and business leader wants to make the city a hub for the manufacture of prescription drugs.
Dr. Lenny Peters said the coronavirus pandemic has exposed the fact that most of the medicine sold in the U.S. is made overseas, which he sees as a major problem.
“During COVID, one of the big lessons we learned is that we were not manufacturing many of our critical medications here — they were in China,” he said. “We don’t even manufacture aspirin here anymore. If we all need to stay alive, we’ve got to manufacture our drugs here. We cannot depend on a foreign country and put our life in danger.”
One of his companies, Peters Medical Research, plans to further this goal by expanding its mission from pharmaceutical studies into the manufacturing and marketing of drugs.
